What kids want to be when they grow up - SMH

"Per a survey conducted by Lego of 3,000 children ages 8-12, their #1 career choice is:

  • in the USA - Blogger or YouTuber
  • in China - Astronaut

This is so, so sad in my opinion.

“Maybe YouTube should sponsor the space program and bring it back to life again. Get all the top influencers to record their adventures at space camp. STEAM for the win!”

They most likely want to be a YouTuber because they see other YouTubers that they look up to. It’s similar to how a kid might want to be a singer while really looking up to Taylor Swift, or something like that. Kids have the chance of becoming successful online. The reason they want to become an “influencer” is because that’s what they are seeing all around them that seems ideal. Usually they grow out of this career path dream after discovering a passion or some other career that they would like to have. I went from wanting to be a teacher to a singer to a doctor to an attorney. Once you feel they are old enough for a “channel” don’t hold them back from the possibility of an influencer career but encourage them to think of others. Have a conversation about how you want them to responsibly use the app.
