Do I reach out to the school about my child's friend experiencing depression?

“Parents: at what point do you say something to a school official about a child experiencing depression? My daughter was talking to a classmate (I don’t know his family) through Instagram, and he talked about how depressed he is and how he’s not going to kill himself, but things are tough. Knowing what I know about teenage suicide, does this message in itself warrant a call to school officials to try to get him help or should I stay out of it?”

“Your daughter is awesome! You must be so very proud of her for bringing this to your attention! You should definitely bring it to the counselors attention. Parents can be a slippery slope. Also, he is asking for help by letting your daughter know that he is suffering and she is a wonderful soul to acknowledge and try to help this young man.”
